How many works are in the Tweed’s permanent collection?
There are approximately 11,000 objects in the collection. Learn more about our collecting areas on the Collection page of our website.
Is the Tweed open year-round?
Yes, the Tweed is open year-round but please check our website or social media when planning your visit to confirm that we are open. Please note that some galleries in the museum may be closed during exhibition installation periods and the museum is closed during university administrative and holiday breaks.
Can I submit a proposal for an exhibition?
The museum is a curated space, and as such, we do not accept unsolicited exhibition proposals from artists or guest curators. If you are an artist who is interested in sharing their work or practice with the director and curator, please introduce yourself at [email protected]. Due to the volume of emails received by artists and limited staff capacity, response time to your email may be long. Thank you for your understanding.
Does the Tweed exhibit student artwork?
The Tweed presents a year-round exhibition schedule featuring works from our permanent collection and special exhibitions. The museum also includes a dedicated gallery for UMD Art & Design Department majors to present their Senior Exhibitions and provides gallery space during the Spring semester for the juried Annual Student Exhibition.
Is the museum available to rent for private events?
The museum is not available as a rental venue.
I want to have an object/work of art restored/repaired or have an artwork that I own appraised or authenticated. Can you recommend someone?
The American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works guides collectors on how to find and choose qualified conservators in their particular area of the country.
The Tweed does not provide authentications or appraisals concerning works of art. However, the organizations and resources below may help you find an appropriate appraiser or assist you with your questions regarding value, authentication, or provenance.

How do I initiate a donation of art to the Tweed?
The Tweed gratefully considers and accepts offers of artworks and related materials that align with our collecting interests and policies. All prospective gifts of artwork must be reviewed by museum leadership before they are acquired into the collection.
Please email the museum director at [email protected] and include as much object information as you have available (artist, title, medium, creation date, provenance information, and dimensions) along with photographs (smart phone images are acceptable).
Please note that we do not accept unsolicited deliveries of artwork to the museum.
