The museum’s collection of contemporary art encompasses art from 1945 to the present day, including artworks in all media and from diverse geographic locations and cultures. Gifts and endowed funds-for-purchase from generous and longstanding donors have enabled the museum to acquire art that diversifies the collection—including works by living and underrepresented artists and those who address social and political issues of our times. Notable contemporary artists represented in the collection include Emma Amos, Irit Batsry, Chakaia Booker, Jeffrey Gibson, Max-Carlos Martinez, Julie Mehretu, Philip Pearlstein, Betye Saar, Alison Saar, Preston Singletary, and Kara Walker.
