November 15: Two exhibits, one opening event.

November 15: Two exhibits, one opening event.

On Thursday, November 15, 6-8 pm, the public is invited to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions at the Tweed Museum of Art. Jazz guitarist Briand Morrison will perform at the opening and some of the artists featured in the exhibition are expected to attend the opening. Like the Tweed Museum, this event is free.

The artists represented in the exhibition are Frank Big Bear, David Bradley, Julie Buffalohead, Andrea Carlson, Jim Denomie, Patrick DesJarlait †, John Feather, Carl Gawboy, Joe Geshick†, George Morrison†, Steve Premo, Karen Savage-Blue, Gordon Van Wert, Al Wadzinski, Star Wallowing Bull, Dyani White Hawk, Francis Yellow, Leah Yellowbird, and Jonathan Thunder for Manifest’o.

Tweed curator Dr. Karissa White curated the exhibition Intersections, which features 19 Minnesota-based Native American artists. The exhibition displays a selection of contemporary Native art, primarily from the Tweed Museum collection. The exhibition highlights significant artists, beginning with George Morrison and Patrick Desjarlait, who were at the forefront of the contemporary Native art movement and have influenced artists since then. It is a continuation of the Tweed Museum’s focus on the development of Native arts in our region. The exhibition is organized in consultation with Anishinaabe artist Jim Denomie.

Intersections will be on view at the museum through August 18, 2019.

Manifest'o is a multi-media installation by local artist Jonathan Thunder. The installation comes with messages that exist on two planes: the ephemeral (or transcendent) and the physical. The stories that these animated vignettes represent are based on the Indigenous people’s memory of this region of the continent — narratives that exist across time and space. The animated stories are the Supernaut Becomes the Water Lily, the Mishu Bizhiw Awakens, and Goldfinch Counts Leaves.

Manifest'o will be on view at the museum through May 26, 2019.
